1868 Restaurant & Bar
Submitted by: Steven Goldman on Nov 29th 2007
We had a superb meal at 1868, but your posted review is incorrect about the tasting menu, which we ordered. It does NOT include wine and is 7 courses, not 9! That said, the food and the presentation were excellent, and we were allowed to split our orders, so that not everyone at the table had to order the tasting menu in order for some to do so. The wine list is first-rate, but even by the glass very expensive and the goblet was only filled to one third, at most. Service, too, was excellent.

easily, one of the best kosher restaurants in the world -- you can ask for a 9-course menu (it's a the chef's discretion), and you can ask for wine-pairings. it's just more expensive.

According to restaurant, KYO is still glatt kosher
Submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Nov 25th 2007
According to a posting on KYO's door last night, there is a horrible rumor going around that KYO is no longer under rabbinical supervision and that it was spread but a disgruntled fired employee.

Rav Yaacov Shlomo Gissinger, who has always been the superving rabbi for the restaurant, states in published reports that KYO is STILL under his supervision.

I know for a fact that the restaurant is still under the strict supervision of Rav Gissinger and there was NO lapse in the Hecsher.

That is a good idea and something that we have thought about for a long time but it's a very difficult process, especially with many of the restaurants not having the technology to accomodate and confirm it. But stay tuned.

Prime Grill New York
Submitted by: Howard A on Nov 17th 2007
Ate there 11/15/07- Bring plenty of money . . . The food was over priced . . $14 for a bowl of lack luster chicken soup . . . I had to send my steak back 2x to have it cooked "medium". 2 hours of parking in a nearby garage cost me only $69.

prime grill should learn that you don't need to charge a lot to offer good food. pathetic.

I dragged 7-10 co-workers for a business dinner at prime grill. Reccomended a Kosher place since I was lead on the deal and was able to choose a restuarent. They stuck us at a corner table and the ac did not work well in AUGUST.

Till today (2 years lateer) I get snide remarks about the place.

Milk 'N Honey (NYC)
Submitted by: Dovid on Nov 17th 2007
I go there for the breakfasts. The bagels, eggs and pancakes are good. The hash browns are undercooked and underseasoned. During lunch, the staff taking orders aren't always able to manage, and can mix up orders. You can end up with the wrong item or missing an item.

During slack times, the staff aren't bussing the tables and wiping them down. As a result, you sometimes have to hunt for a relatively clean table.

Diamond Dairy of NY
Submitted by: Dovid on Nov 17th 2007
I have been going there for 10 years. The cholent on Thursday and Fridays is excellent, and the smaller-sized portion is enough for two. There are several specialty dishes listed but these aren’t always available, so be prepared to order something else. Service is fast, however. I don’t recall any of the staff mixing up an order or being unpleasant. The food is like home cooking but some items are blander than I would like. The borscht, for example, is always a disappointment; the other soups are better.

I’ve never had trouble getting a table. In fact, when it’s busy, the counter fills up before the tables do. If I am in a hurry, I will sit at the counter.

Miriam, great question. Actually, Village Steakhouse will be featured on our website shortly. I just spoke with the owner, Marc Attia, and he is very excited about his new steakhouse - it just opened last week.

Here's the info:
Located on 9440 West Sahara Avenue, Las Vegas, NV

I was just in Las Vegas and had a great meal at Village Steakhouse. Coming from Toronto, I thought the pricing was reasonable and the food was excellent.

The owner came by to make sure everything was fine and the service was excellent as well.

I definitely recommend this restaurant

Cafe Classico

Served us frozen cake instead of apple tarts. No coffee, only green tea or regular tea. Place was very cold. Not pleasant to eat while cold. How can a restaurant not have coffee to serve with dessert? Be advised, they give you a hard time over accepting credit cards even though they are expensive. Our dinners (2 sandwiches, 2 Snapples, 2 slices of apple cake) came to over $50 before the tip. They embarrassed us last night over accepting our VISA. Does everyone walk around with loads of cash in NYC? I don't think so. Why embarrass customers? We'll never go back.

They should definitely accept credit cards, this is the 21st century after all. They are relatively cheap compared to other Manhattan spots where they charge ridiculous amount of money

Canela
Submitted by: Raphy Solomon on Nov 1st 2007
It was a real treat to be able to eat out at an establishment where the hype is actually matched by the food.
To celebrate our twin birthdays my wife, son and I went out for dinner this evening to Canela.
The retaurant has a certain understated elegance....although I feel that this could of been enhanced with tablecloths. THe bread offered was a delightful warmwalunut loaf and was served with a dip made of good olive, oil and saffron. Our starters were delicious...I had the Foie Gras with Eggplant - it was different then what was actually on the menu and the 2 baby eggplants were delicious, however a tad oversweet. The foie gras was mouthmeltingly good and it was a well executed dish and well presented. The second starter was the open ravioli with shredded duck, which has a nice flavour. The duck was just a tiny bit overcooked, but it too was overall a well executed dish.
FOr mains my wife had the Fillet which was cooked to perfection. She ordered it medium and in a rare display of culiany acuity not often seen in Israel, it actually arrived medium. The sauce was a rich red wine demi glace and it was really well seasoned. The potato gnocci were slightly burnt and the steamed baby Bok Choy had too much salt from what one can only assume was a contientious and energetic mashgiach plying his trade removing all traces of undesireable matter from the vegetable....but overall and again a good dish. The sauteed chicken livers were perfectly cooked and this too was a good dish. My lamb stew was (to my taste) slightly overseasoned and the chef had either allowed all of the oil to be plated along with the lamb or had decided that chanukah had arrived early and was in a VERY generous and liberal mood with the oil. The lamb was butter soft, the accompanying vegetable puree was tasty and the glazed baby onions had a good crunch to them. The least good out of our three mains, but with a little less salt and about half a gallon of oil less it would of been as good as the other dishes. Our only let down were the desserts. Not much of a choice and what we did choose was a dissapointment. Service was efficient and friendly and it was a delightful experience. Not the cheapest of meals, but good value for a fine dining experience. The portions are not massive - hint hint......but adequete. We will definately be going back and hope that they do something about the desserts as that would make for a truly fine dining experience.

Ernie & Ellie
Submitted by: Judith on Oct 31st 2007
Ernie & Ellie’s, also known simply to locals as Ernie’s, is beloved as a favourite family kosher restaurant. On a typical evening, you can be sure to find families celebrating birthdays and anniversaries as well as groups of friends enjoying one another’s company and the warm setting. Ernie’s makes its mark by being both an elegant and semi-formal sit-down restaurant as well as a child-friendly eatery with a child-friendly menu.
Ernie & Ellie’s is located on the ground floor of the Décarie Square shopping mall, which conveniently provides ample and free parking at all hours. Ernie’s can be found in close proximity to the Vézina Avenue entrance, which also lends the restaurant an exclusive tone and ensures that the restaurant is somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle of the mall.
The restaurant has recently undergone a change of ownership, and the new owners of Russian origin have vamped up both the décor and the menu. The newly renovated restaurant is both elegant and cozy - it has a substantial seating capacity and yet manages to give the impression of privacy at each of its many tables. Ernie’s is also much-loved for its large plush banquettes and the distinction of getting to sit at one on a busy night is definitely considered a treat. Ernie’s is also extremely well-serviced and the wait staff is always courteous, attentive and ready to refill an empty water glass.
The menu at Ernie’s is as vast and diverse as its milieu and there is truly something for everyone! For vegetarians there are excellent fish and pasta dishes on the menu. However, Ernie’s is most widely celebrated for its Chinese and American deli offerings. To reflect the heritage of the new owners, some notable Soviet dishes have also been added to the menu. Try the Chebureki, a large meat and spice-filled fried pastry, the Russian and Central Asian version of the boureka.
Every outing at Ernie’s begins with one of their delicious soups. My favourite is the Won Ton Soup which features meat-filled dumplings in a chicken broth and garnished with chopped green onion and crunchy Chinese noodles, and served with soy sauce. Other popular soups are the Hot & Sour, Chicken Noodle and Cabbage soups.
For those who would prefer to begin their meals with an appetizer, I strongly suggest the Pu Pu Platter, especially for those looking to impress or entertain a guest. The platter consists of an assortment of delicious hors d’œuvres surrounding a small flame and is a great conversation piece as guests ‘grill’ skewered veal and chicken.
As far as main courses go, there are plenty to choose from! There is a children’s menu which offers the usual kid-friendly fare such as chicken nuggets and hot dogs served with French fries. For those of us in the over 12 years of age category, there is an assortment of popular Chinese dishes, such as Pineapple Chicken, Cashew Chicken, Sesame Beef to name just a few. There are a number of salads, sandwiches, steaks and meat platters available as well. Favorite of mine include the Chicken brochette platter and the Smoked Meat sandwich. Whatever dish you choose, you can always be assured that your meal will be consistently fresh, succulent and keep you coming back to try more.
My suggestion is to choose from the daily specials available at both lunch and dinner and which include a variety of main courses as well as a choice of soups or tomato juice, tea or coffee and choice of desserts. You will definitely not leave hungry!

Expresti Gourmet
Submitted by: Judith on Oct 28th 2007
Expresti is a cozy little restaurant on Queen Mary Road, and at the heart of Montreal’s unofficial kosher restaurant district.
I have had the pleasure of enjoying many lunches and dinners at Expresti since its opening in 2005, and the simple and yet delicious fare is what keeps me and my friends (and all of Jewish Montreal it seems on many Saturday nights!) coming back.
Expresti’s lunch menu includes what are honestly the best paninis and wraps in the city. One favourite of mine is the California Wrap which is a sizeable pesto-flavoured wrap filled with avocado, mock crab, Boston lettuce and a special house dressing and served with a small pasta salad on the side. You should also try an Italian Panini, which is a sandwich made up of mozzarella, Edam cheese and grilled vegetables on a pressed baguette.
For dinner, Expresti is the perfect place for couples looking for a satisfying and milchig meal. My perfect Expresti meals always starts with the best French onion soup this side of the Atlantic, served in a gorgeous French onion soup terrine and topped with a toasted baguette slice and mozzarella cheese. There is also a ‘soup de jour’ alternative for calorie-counters which normally include varieties of pureed vegetable soups.
As a main course, enjoy one of Expresti’s many delicious salads (especially the Salmon teriyaki salad), pizzas, pastas (no favourites here as all the pastas are equally amazing), crepes or fish dishes. Expresti also has an excellent sushi menu which includes regular sushi fare but also has some out-of-the-ordinary rolls as well, filled with exotic fruit which are pretty sumptuous and yet affordable treats.
No matter how full you feel after an Expresti dinner, there is always room for an Expresti dessert. Many of my friends will actually stop by specifically for the melt-in-your-mouth cheesecakes, which are available in Chocolate, Strawberry and Mocha. An equally big hit are the dessert chocolate crepes.
As I mentioned before, Expresti does tend to get filled up pretty quickly on a busy evening, and so your best bet is to call and make reservations even ten minutes in advance. I often call in lunches for takeout to make the most out of my one hour work lunch, and I assure you that my orders stay just as tasty and warm as when I eat in.
Whatever time of day you decide to drop by this cute and chic bistro, you can be assured of a time worth your while!
