Kosher resteraunts close to West 4th and 6th Submitted by: robyn on Nov 7th 2006 Can anyone recommend kosher resteraunts in the East/West Village? I am looking for places with a mainstream hechsher, and all price ranges, dairy or meat.
Reply #1 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Nov 9th 2006 Since The Village Crown closed up a few months ago there really isn't anything there, especially with a good supervision.
The closest restaurant might be Essex on Coney Downtown (meat) in the Wall Street area and Circa-ny (dairy) on Dey Streey near the World trade Center site.

Reply #2 submitted by: Alex on Jan 1st 2007 There is a Kosher Chinese restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut 'CT'. We ate there this summer (2006) and it was really good. It's called Kosher Express Glatt Kosher Chinese Restaurant Eat In & Take Out (under the OK supervision) Tel: 203-387-7889 Fax: 203-387-7867
132 Amity Road 'Route 63' (between Sunset Drive and Wilbur Cross Parkway 'Route 15')., New Haven CT 06515 (Shell and Mobile stations accross from each other on Wilbur Cross Parkway as well as a Toyota dealership a little further up. This place was a quasi take out and eat it restaurant. There is plenty of room to sit and eat though and it's more spacious than most other Kosher Chinese take out places.

La Creperie Submitted by: Rachel Bernstein on Oct 12th 2006 I have enjoyed several good meals at La Creperie.
My only regret is that it opens so late in the morning (11am), missing out on many people including tourists who often opt for an "early" breakfast so as to get in a "full day".
Reply #1 submitted by: Alex on Jan 1st 2007 I think La Creperie is meant to be an upscale fine dining restaurant located in a residential part of New York City with more of a lunch and dinner menu (the Upper West Side) and is not currently targeting that tourist demographic. Perhaps you could suggest that option to them if there is enough interest on the part of consumers.

Reply #2 submitted by: Neil Wallin on Dec 25th 2006 Your Dad was the reason we went back so often to Shmulks. He always had a smile, a joke, some advice- anything to make our days brighter. We were college kids with very limited money and yet he made us feel like VIPs at all times. I wound up in the Kosher Chinese restaurant business (Cho-Sen Garden,Island and Village) and I would like to say that a positive experience solely due to your Dad's efforts weighed in heavily (okay, so a little too heavily!!) in my thought process. Please send special regards from Neil and my then girlfriend Barbara (my wife now of 25 years!and my 20 year old Allie!). He will also remember me as the weekend Maitre D' at the famous Moshe Peking restaurant throughout attending Touro College.

Kosher Today article on Trans Fat Submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Oct 3rd 2006 FEATURE:
New York’s Kosher Restaurants Vow to Adjust to Trans Fats Restrictions
New York...Kosher restaurants say that they will adjust their menus to meet proposed restrictions on the use of trans fats, although some were clearly unhappy. The New York City Board of Health last week unveiled a proposal that would sharply limit the use of ingredients that contain the artery-clogging substance, commonly listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated oil. If the ban goes into effect, offenders could face fines of up to $2,000 for each violation.
A similar plan to restrict trans fats in restaurant food has been proposed in Chicago and is still under consideration, although it has been ridiculed by some as unnecessary government meddling. The latest version of the Chicago plan would only apply to companies with annual revenues of more than $20 million, a provision aimed exclusively at fast-food giants.
New York's health department had asked restaurants to impose a voluntary ban last year but found use of trans fats unchanged in recent surveys. Under the New York proposal, restaurants would need to remove artificial trans fats from cooking oils, margarine and shortening by July 1, 2007, and all other foodstuffs by July 1, 2008. It would not affect grocery stores. It also would not apply to naturally occurring trans fats, which are found in some meats and dairy.
Elan Kornblum, publisher of Great Kosher Restaurant Magazine commented, “if all (kosher) restaurants have to do it, they will all be on same playing field.” He added: “Chefs will have to be creative in order to provide the same great taste as before. This ban would be healthier for consumers and therefore it’s a good idea.” Hyam Maryles, the Food and Beverage Director of the Prime Grill Restaurant, located in Midtown Manhattan, said that his restaurant has always focused on providing clients with a healthier menu while acknowledging that it also included fatty foods. “If the ban were to be instituted it would not pose a great problem for us. We have talented chefs who are able to change recipes on a whim.”
Brocha Landau, Manager of Dougies in Brooklyn, felt the ban “would have a negative impact on kosher restaurants, especially the franchise restaurants.” She added: “A lot of restaurants have items on the menu with trans fats. We would have to change our recipes, change the way our foods are prepared and change how we buy our foods.” Michael Weltz, General Manager Park East Grill & Park East Caterers, said: “I think the proposed ban on trans fats ingredients is a step in the right direction. Even though it is more expensive to do without them, we stopped using trans fats months ago.”
Yuliya Mazur, owner of Grill de Paris, told KosherToday correspondent Sarah Cohen, “We are no longer using trans fats at all in our restaurant and therefore this proposed ban poses no problem to our restaurant.” Scott Magram, CEO of My Most Favorite Dessert in Midtown Manhattan, was concerned whether certain products could be made for Passover. “If the ban becomes a reality and there is not a Passover product available, it will impact us tremendously.”
Author, Chef and restaurateur Jeff Nathan was also amongst the group of restaurants who thought the proposal was “absolutely ridiculous.” He noted “We're permitted to buy cigarettes, cigars and alcohol, but not trans fat?” Nathan said that he rarely uses trans fats. “By chance, we use very little of it...it's part of the margarine spread offered before every meal, and as a part of ingredients like Crisco shortening to be used in our baked products. After all, as a meat restaurant, we often substitute shortening and margarine for butter.” Nathan felt that the ban would have a very detrimental effect on desserts.
Pita Loca Submitted by: Sam Weiss on Sep 30th 2006 Pita Loca is one of the best Kosher restaurants on the beach. You really have a lot of options when it comes to their pitas such as adding red cabbage, cole slaw, humus etc. which you don't get at other pita chains. The only thing is that it is sometimes hard to place an order over the phone because it is hard to understand the lady that takes the orders. However, they are now on Stopcooking.com so you can place your orders online. I don't know if they still do it but I think they also do a shabbat dinner at the Mirador.
kosher filet mignon? Submitted by: harvey gordon on Sep 28th 2006 why isn't filet mignon kosher? or is it? whats the history behind this subject?
Reply #1 submitted by: bill kohn on Oct 8th 2006 I am told that in Israel it can be kosher, as there some shochetim are specially trained to remove whatever nerve from the hind quarter would otherwise make the cuts located there unkosher.
Reply #2 submitted by: Marc Roth on Nov 9th 2006 I have a friend in the meat business. He sells to all the upscale steak houses in NY area including Peter Luger, etc etc. He is a very traditional Jew. He inquired with various rabbis about him removing the psiatic vein in order to sell kosher sirloin, filet mignon steaks etc in US--he was told absolutely not-even with proper supervision. My question is WHY can't he? Is it political, financial or just rabbinic mishegoss?
Panini Cafe Submitted by: A. Yid on Sep 27th 2006 What a FANTASTIC restaurant. The food was DELICIOUS, the portions were huge, the price was fair, the service was very good, the waitress was an adorable Israeli girl very eager to please.
I had the Eggplant/Feta Cheese Rollentini on a Sweet Potato as an appettizer- YUM. The onion soup was great, and we split a few excellent crusty panini sandwiches (Acocado/Feta and Portabello/Goat Cheese), some cool salads, and an excellant fish dish. An overall 10 out of 10 after a day of chilling at the pool and losing at the blackjack tables.
Absolutely Recommended.
Bagel place in Brooklyn?? Submitted by: Mom from CA on Sep 19th 2006 Can anyone recommend a restaurant or dairy takeout place in Brooklyn that could make up bagel platters for a family event in October? Sort of like what one would serve at a bris. Yes, I know there are HUNDREDS of kosher restaurants in NY, but I need one that is clean, reliable and will make up nice platters and not give me "you're from out-of-town I don't have to do a nice job" grief. I am trying to plan this event from cross country.
Thanks in advance!
