Daughters Birthday Party at La Creperie
Submitted by: Lisa R. on Aug 2nd 2005
Just had a wonderful afternoon celebrating our daughters special bithday. The staff (especially Rabbi Gross and Vicky) did a wonderful job at making our party everything and more that we hoped for. Because I had to plan everything from a different State, I was concerned as to how it would all turn out...no need for concern...it is a lovely restaurant, we were set up for about 35 people in the front of the restaurant....the food was really delicious. They put together a lovely menu for us we all had such nice choices....service was very accomodating, presentation of food was lovely and the taste was yummy. We recommend this restaurant on the upper west side for a lovely meal and a special simcha!

Need a fancy kosher restaurant

I am looking for a fancy kosher resturant in either new york city or queens, ny

Reply #1 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Jul 29th 2005
We'll start with Queens, because the city has plenty. If your looking for fancy dairy, Habustan, on Union Turnpike is your best choice. For meat, Skewers Steakhouse also on Union Turnpike, is a great restaurant with very nice ambiance. Colbeh on Main Street is also pretty fancy.

For Manhattan, there's enough restaurants to choose from, so if you're looking for "fancy"- here are some suggestions:
Colbeh on 39th & 6th, has a very upscale look, as does Abigael's, Broadway & 38th and Mike's Bistro on 72nd & Broadway. Not to mention Le Marais, Haikara Grill, Village Crown, ec. Like I said Manhattan has plenty of fancy restaurants. For dairy- Gusto Va Mare, La Creperie (new) and My Most Favorite Dessert are also excellent choices.
Good luck.

In New York City, there is Mike's Bistro on West 72nd Street (fleishig) and Talia's Steak House on Columbus and 92nd Street. Both are very good.

Ranoosh Long Branch
Submitted by: Joe H on Jul 28th 2005
I used to go to Ranoosh from time to time a few years ago; the food was always good and the service was always efficient yet very friendly.

I hadn't had a chance to go there since it went kosher, but I heard a few weeks ago (July 05) that it had started opening at lunch time. I went for lunch with a friend. The place is looking shabby, untidy and run down now. We walked in and nobody was at the desk. We waited. After a couple of minutes he two men who we passed sitting outside the front strolled in; they were the waiters. The place was empty yet some of the tables hadn't been cleared.

We stayed for lunch nonetheless. The food was still good (great baba ganouj), but the dessert menu had lost all the mediterranean specialties which used to be so good with strong black coffee (such as baklava) to be replaced with banal junk such as tollhouse pie! Still, as I said, the main food was great, so we tried it again a couple of weeks later.

This time one of the waiters proved to be clearly incompetent and downright rude. While we were ordering, the waiter's cell phone went off twice; each time he broke off to answer what was clearly a social call! We clearly ordered mint tea, but were brought black tea. When I asked again for mint tea I was told that there wasn't any although we weren't told that when we first ordered it. The waiters disappeared for long periods and service was generally slow. I asked three times for the music - which was so loud that we couldn't converse comfortably - to be turned down (we were the only diners in that particular room). The first time it was turned down momentarily. The second time, the waiter acknowledged me but did nothing. The third time the waiter refused, telling us that the diners outside wouldn't be able to hear the music. My friend and I sat waiting for the check, not even bothering to try to talk over the music.

As I said, the food was still good, despite the pared-down menu, but the attitude of the staff is appalling; the first time I've ever been to a restaurant and not tipped.

I'm trying to print out the coupon for a 20% to 50% off but it doesn't show on the screen.
I'm planing to come there at around 5:45 this evening. It will be our first time. Our friends are bringing us. I hope I will be able to eat acording to my food plan which is, meat ( or fish) without any sugar additives or flour ( carbohaidrates) , cooked, fried or grilled vegetables, and a huge salad, dressing ( no sugar)on the side.
I'm looking forwards to this new experience.
thank you.

Bar Muda Restaurant, Brooklyn?

As far as I know they haven't opened yet. They will be a dairy restaurant and the building looks impressive.

I may be wrong, but I drove by last week, and it looked like it was open.

Reply #3 submitted by: Barbara K. on Jul 27th 2005
Decided to check this place out for myself. Located on Coney Island Avenue, between Chesnut, and Avenue M, it opened about one week ago, with (as far as I'm aware) no fanfare, pre-publicity, or Grand Opening sign out front. Just noticed it in passing.
As a former poster said, Bar Muda has a dairy menu of fish, pasta, pizza, soups, salads, and desserts.
The restaurant and bar are very attractive. There weren't that many tables on the ground floor level where we were seated. There is an upper level which we were told would be for larger parties, but I don't think that this level was being used yet.
The hostess was pleasant, and accomodating. The sliced herbed bread, which was accompanied by both an olive oil mixture, and margarine (so you have a choice), was delicious, and fresh.
I ordered the grilled salmon filet, but was hesitant about the Lo-Mein which was listed as the side dish that accompanied it. It turned out that the salmon was excellent, and the Lo-Mein - not your typical Chinese version - was flavored very nicely with seasoning and herbs. Both were delicious. My husband enjoyed the 3 (or 4?) cheese individual pizza pie that he ordered. Acquaintances of ours, at a table of 4 nearby, said that they had each ordered something different, and were all pleased with their choices.
There was a nice selection of desserts on the menu, plus an assortment of cakes and pies.
( The cakes and pies were apparently not baked in house, as I've seen some of the same ones at other nice restaurants.) I ordered the tri-color mousse cake, which was rich and very good; and my husband had the pecan pie (which to our taste didn't have enough of the sweet gooey filling in relation to the abundance of nuts).
The service at our table was just so so, as our waiter was pleasant, but seemed very inexperienced. We observed other waiters at tables nearby, who seemed more capable.
I don't think it's fair to make a final judgment on the service yet, since the place is so new.

I would definitely recommend giving Bar Muda a try. It seems to have already been discovered, despite the lack of hype - as the place was full, and there were several groups waiting to be seated.

Estihana Manhattan
Submitted by: Susan on Jul 22nd 2005
Excellent food, but service left something to be desired. My husband went there for lunch during a slow time, and was kept waiting for everything, including the menu. We thought maybe it was an "off" day, but on our last night in town we went there for dinner. All went smoothly until it came time to pay the check. I wanted to use up some traveller's cheques and the waiter said it was ok. Only after I had filled them out (completly, as is the standard procedure for these), did others working there, including the manager, say that my writing out the place name invalidated them. (Fortunately, my bank at home had no problem cashing them, and was puzzled by why writing in the place name was so bad). No apologies or anything else were offered. Again, great food, but fortunately there are many other places to get kosher sushi.

If you're looking for top notch (meaning high end) and you don't mind paying a little more, try Solo, it's the sister restaurant to Prime Grill. They are located in the Sony Building on Madison & 55th. There info and picture is not yet on this website, but it will be soon.

And I guess if you're looking for meat in the Midtown area, I also recommend Haikara Grill (on 63rd between 2nd & 3rd Ave) and if you want to go uptown, you might like Park East Grill on 2nd & 82nd. These are all frequently visited by non-Jews anyway.

Re: Hidden Hotdog Stand
Submitted by: Akira Ohiso on Jul 18th 2005
There is a kosher hotdog stand in Penn Station for any kosher commuters who have a hankering for a hotdog on the way home. It is a little bit past the timetable board in the long corridor. If you are heading towards 8th Avenue it will be on your right side inside a deli, If you pass Starbucks you have gone to far. The hotdogs were good, nothing special, but a kosher restaurant is invaluable for anybody craving a snack before they hop on the train.

Zion Yemenite Cuisine
Submitted by: elinchik on Jul 14th 2005
The food was good, the service efficient, but I can't say that I felt any special Yemenite flavor at this place. Perhaps they have a couple of Yemenite dishes on the menu (I guess we didn't pick those), but it just seemed like another Middle Eastern/Grill place. It didn't strike me as being authentic.

The Best!
Submitted by: Craig on Jul 11th 2005
I am from Florida but am very familiar with Essex; I have been going there for years. When I visited my grandmother (who lived in midwood) I almost always went to Essex-I remember the days when it was just a deli. Since the introduction of Chinese, it has made this restaurant even better. Whenever I visit New York, I always stop at essex to pick up food, including chinese dinners to take back to Florida. Harry and his son are wonderful people and I was dissapointed this weekend when I went to Essex and found out about the fire. I'm sure when they reopen it will be business as usual! Essex is the best food in NY!

Lower Manhattan and Midtown mainly because it's alot closer to us?

Reply #3 submitted by: Adam on Jul 11th 2005
The way you have to eat in Manhattan without spending a lot but still getting the "nice night out" feeling, is to skip the appetizers, drinks and desserts and to just get a main that isn't too expensive that will fill you up. Most places will give you a a nice portion size.

Reply #4 submitted by: Elan Kornblum, Publisher on Jul 11th 2005
For Lower Manhattan there really is only Village Crown and Essex on Coney Downtown, and they both aren't too pricey. For midtown, try Wolf & Lamb-good food, moderate Midtown prices and nice ambiance. And believe it or not, Le Marais which is one of the best steakhouses in the country, has a wonderful Steak & Fries combo for under $20.

Reply #5 submitted by: Michelle on Jul 12th 2005
Thanks so much for your replies. I loved Le Marais...next time I'll check the menu for that combo, Village Crown is my fave restaurant so far, and I will def. check out Wolf & Lamb. Adam, I always order coke and my fiance gets beer, no wine or any of that sorta stuff, and sometimes a great entree is satisfying without any appetizers but I don't think I could give up dessert!

The dishes are daring and opulient, but for the prices the service should be more attentive and in sync with the quality of the food. I felt like college kids with summer jobs were serving me. The ambiance and decor should be more in sync with what the CIT trained chef is trying to present. I'm not sure the place knows what it is yet.

Dougies BBQ Queens
Submitted by: Anonymous on Jul 7th 2005
I had such a wonderful experience with my family in this restaurant. The food was plentiful, delicious and the service was outstanding. The place was immaculate with the carpet freshly vacuumed. The only thing that topped the dinner was the sheva brachos that I booked while I was there. The owner of the place, Elliot was so helpful and went out of his way to accommodate our every request. He served a much more elegant menu than the regular Dougies food. Grilled chicken salads, chiccken fingers, etc. Everyone was raving. A real pleasure.
