Old world meets new world at Quattro Gatti, a Southern Italian gem located on east 81st street. This neighborhood oriented eatery has been serving fresh traditional fare to it's devoted clientele since September of 1985. The Zagat Survey states that the “leisurely meals with treat-you-like-family service make this old-line Upper East Side Italian feel like home to many - there’s a reason it’s been there forever: supporters say the
food’s fantastic.”
A fresh display of antipasti welcomes guests as they enter the restaurant, and leads them into the sunken dining room where they are greeted by a large palm tree. With flowers and candles adorning the white tablecloths, a romantic and comfortable atmosphere is created.
Owner / chef Remo Mastrangelo offers diners a special glimpse of his skills in the kitchen, which were honed by observing the family's restaurant business, which dates back nearly 80 years in Italy. Nightly specials may include the wonderful Branzino al Remo, in which the fish is grilled and topped with chopped tomato and basil. The Pappardelle Quattro Gatti, prepared with porcini mushrooms, sundried tomato, tomato sauce and a touch of cream is a winner among the many varied pasta dishes offered. An always gracious host, Remo welcomes patrons all throughout the day, whether they stop in for a meal, or a simple glass of vino at the bar. A fairly extensive wine list is at your disposal should you be inclined to try a sampling from Italy, California, Australia or Chile.
The warmer months present diners with the opportunity to sample the fare outdoors on the tree-lined sidestreet in which Quattro Gatti is situated. What Upper East Siders have come to learn over the years is that this restaurant's consistancy will have them returning for years to come.
