Sabor Restaurant specializes in combining food from different Hispanic traditions while presenting many different options for diners. When it first opened, this West Side version of the popular East Side cafe was immediately crowded with folks hungry for the wonderfully spiced tapas from all over the Latin world.
Two of the more applauded selections to start with are the Croquetas de pollo - smoked chicken croquettes - and the Arepitas - Corn cakes with melted farmer cheese and chorizo. These "Tapas Grandes", as they have come to be known, are larger than life in both taste and design. The many samplings of ceviche are must tries as well - salmon, "chino latino" soy marinated tuna with ginger, and Ecuadorian shrimp with lime and tomatos are outstanding choices.
The main courses at Sabor represent a wonderful variation of the Nuevo Latino fare. The "Churrasco" steak or paella is a fabulous dish, as is the Yuca encrusted salmon with chipotle and goat cheese. Chicken croquettes - three large servings of minced smoked chicken under a crunchy crust - have become some a quick favorite. Traditional side orders include tostones and fried sweet plantains.
The great line of tapas wouldn't be complete without what many consider the best mojitos in the neighborhood. Fabulous desserts make their way to the table after the entrees are presented, so be sure to save some room. With accolades from the New York Times, New York Post, and New York Magazine, Sabor has remained a favorite among Upper West Siders.
